This morning I delivered (for the second time) a Contact North webinar: Choosing Media: How They Differ and How to make the Best Choices for Your Teaching‘ based on Chapters 6-8 of my open, online textbook, Teaching in a Digital Age.
The webinar was primarily a discussion with participants about the main issues involved in choosing appropriate media for teaching and learning.
The following topics were covered:
- The difference between media and technology
- Types of media
- Pedagogical differences between media
- SECTIONS: a model for deciding between media
- General questions on the use of media in education

Hi Tony,
Thanks for sharing this. I ran into some technical difficulties when I tried to playback the webinar recording; both playing in the web browser and downloading and playing back the .arf format file didn’t work for me. I looked up .arf and it seems to be a proprietary format for use with WebEx’s software. Is it possible to make the recording available in a more open/user friendly format?
Thanks in advance 🙂
Matt
Thanks, Matt
Yes, you have to download and install Webex’s Network Player (https://www.webex.com/play-webex-recording.html). You only have to do this once.
Contact North organises and hosts the webinar, and I have passed your comment on to them.
Thanks for the info 🙂
I usually use Linux (Ubuntu) which WebEx don’t support. I’ll try installing the WebEx app on Android and see if that’ll play the recording.
All the best,
Matt
Update: Installed the Cisco WebEx Meeting app for Android. Couldn’t find anywhere to open a URL/link to playback a WebEx recording. I found an old response to a question about playing back recordings on Android on WebEx’s forums:
“WebEx recordings are not available for playback on mobile WebEx apps. It still requires WebEx on the desktop for playback. Mobile playback is something we’re looking at as a feature in the future.”
So no joy there.
I guess I’ll have to boot up a Windows image to watch it on.
Thanks again for sharing the recording 🙂
