Kolowich, S. (2009) E-Learning’s Third Phase Inside Higher Education, September 27

An article about new players in the learning management system field. However, I don’t buy the author’s argument that these new players provide the third phase of e-learning. The third phase of e-learning will come from learner empowerment through the use of web 2.0 tools. Kenneth Green of the Campus Computing Project makes the point that the new developments in e-learning allow for better analytics, so while I will accept the view that this represents the third stage of LMSs, the article misses the whole point of the potential changes that will come from the increased adoption of web 2.0 tools and their effect on the future of LMSs. In the meantime, more boring LMS wars.
